The Hogs Back

We are a small yard, established in 1989, growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the south facing slopes of the Hogs Back Ridge. This is a favoured location for both climate and soil type, the topsoil being 6-12 inches of clay loam and the sub-soil being several hundred feet of chalk, this combination allowing us to grow champagne varieties to their best advantage.

Many other locations in England are not so blessed, thus the grapes grown on inferior soil types never do achieve the true flavours which one may anticipate.

It is believed that this area was cultivated for wine in Roman times, however we think that in a side by side comparison we would win the quality test hands down!

Our aim is to produce excellent white wines with crispness, fruit and acidity nicely balanced. In the Sparkling form, vinified according to the traditional "methode champenoise" , we have a truly surprisingly good English Bubbly. Furthermore, we also, uniquely, produce a blended Still wine which is a balance of both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - again a pleasant surprise to the palate!
