Welcome to Greyfriars Vineyard and winery. Greyfriars is located on the sunny south facing chalk slopes of the Hog’s Back at Puttenham, just outside Guildford in Surrey. The original vineyard was planted in 1989 and since taking over in 2010 we have expanded the area under vine to almost 50 acres on three sites focusing on producing stunning English Sparkling Wine. We have also built a brand new Winery containing state of the art winemaking equipment and dug a natural chalk underground cellar for ageing our wine prior to release.
Our vineyards are predominantly planted with the three classic Champagne varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. However, we also have small plots of Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. We are producing a range of spectacular English Sparkling Wines reflecting the unique local soil conditions, climate and heritage of the Surrey North Downs. Our early releases of wine since 2011 have gained critical acclaim and have already won a number of prizes in international competitions including the Decanter World Wine Awards.
Come and see us at Greyfriars. We are open by appointment for tours and events and we usually have some limited release wines only available at the vineyard. Let us tell you our story, enjoy our wines and see how we as a family vineyard do things a little differently.
The current Greyfriars Vineyard was originally planted in 1989. After several years of experimentation the one and a half acre plot was planted with predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties. In the late eighties, Greyfriars was one of the first vineyards in England to plant these traditional Champagne grape varieties.
After a number of years of producing both still and sparkling wines, Greyfriars has most recently focused predominantly on making high quality sparkling wines. Our wines are made using the ‘traditional method’ – a sparkling wine making technique which utilises a secondary fermentation and subsequent ageing in the bottle in the cellar for at least three years before it is ready to drink. This requires a lot more hard work and patience than producing still wines!
Since 2011 we have expanded the vineyard by planting an additional 40 acres of the three classic Champagne grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. We have also completed a major redevelopment of the existing winery to accommodate the resulting increased production levels, which includes the addition of a natural chalk cellar to store our wines.
In addition, we are seeking to take advantage of the most modern grape growing and winemaking technology and are planning some exciting trials and experiments in both the vineyard and the winery over the next few years. Our aim is not just to produce a Champagne ‘copy’ but rather to create a small range of great sparkling wines which reflects the unique geology, soil conditions, climate and heritage of the wonderful landscape of the Surrey North Downs.
